Focus of the SYMPHONIC/JAZZ BAND Camp will be to provide students a learning environment with the opportunity to study, rehearse and play quality band literature. Students will also have scheduled master class and music theory classes. Students working towards all-state auditions will also have the opportunity to study and rehearse required materials. Private lessons will also be available. Concert will be Wednesday afternoon. Auditions for these bands will be scheduled on Sunday afternoon upon check-in at camp. |

DRUM MAJOR CAMP

Students will receive instruction in the following:

! Conducting Styles & Techniques
! Score Reading
! Basic Teaching Strategies
! Marching Fundamentals
! Leadership Skills
! Creation of Salutes
! Mace Fundamentals.
Mr. Craig Collins, Principal of the Harrison School of the Arts, in Lakeland has taught and directed this Drum Majoring Camp since 1987. Craig is a former University of Florida Drum Major and a Blue Key alumnus. Other Instructors returning to camp this year will be Ernesta Suarez, Brad Wharton & Ryan Kelly. Dr.Corey Spurlin, Marching Band Director at Auburn University and former Drum Major at the University of Alabama is a new addition to the Drum Major Camp staff.
Drum Majors will be evaluated on Wednesday, the last day of camp, at 1:00 PM in the Dendy Auditorium. At 2:00 PM the Drum Majors will march to the McArthur Gymnasium for presentation of the Outstanding Camper awards. Parents, band directors, and friends are invited to attend this program.

(Color Guard, Flags, Rifle, Saber)

COLOR GUARD: (FLAG, RIFLE & SABRE)
Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes will be offered in Flag, Rifle, and Sabre. Dance also will be offered since Color Guards often need choreographed body moves. Guard routines will be choreographed to music and individual color guards will be able to adapt routines to their own band music. A daily Drill Down will be held to encourage campers to practice and improve basic fundamentals and technique. Awards will be given daily for the Drill Down and the hardest working campers. Trophies for Most Improved Color Guard and Most Outstanding Color Guard will be presented during the camp ending program. Also, trophies will be awarded to Most Improved and Most Outstanding individual color guard campers. Evaluation of camp routines will be at 1:00 PM and Awards will be presented at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, the last day of camp, in McArthur Gymnasium. Parents and friends are invited to attend these activities.

PERCUSSION CAMP

Focus of the Percussion Camp will be MARCHING DRUMLINE TECHNIQUES including Cadences, Solos, Technique and Timing exercises. MUSIC READING skills and DRUM SET (all styles) will also be taught. All Percussion Campers need to bring the following: Sticks, Drums, Stands, Earplugs, and Notebook & Pencil. Please indicate on application blank which drum you will be bringing to camp. Spirit awards will be given daily as well as ribbons for hardest worker. Trophies will be awarded to outstanding campers at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, the last day of camp, at McArthur Gymnasium. Parents and friends are invited to attend this end-of-camp program.

The Leadership curriculum for Penny’s Camp is written specifically for students participating in band who would like to acquire the skills of a successful leader. Section Leaders, Band Officers, and any Band or Guard member interested in learning these Leadership skills is encouraged to participate in this course. Leadership campers are asked to bring there instrument as they will perform with the Symphonic Band. Topics covered in the course include:
1. Expectations of a Student Leader in the Band
2. Communicating with the Band Director
3. Developing your Personal Strengths
4. Basic teaching Procedures – in the band room/ on the field
5. Importance of Goal Setting
6. Leaders must be Prepared, Dependable, and Responsible
7. Building your own Self Esteem and Confidence
8. Learning Motivational and People-Management skills
9. Leader’s good Attitude and Enthusiasm is contagious
l0. Good Leadership is built on Integrity and Honesty
This curriculum is taught by Eric Allen, Ashby Goldstein & Jon Sever. Dr. Bentley Shellahamer is the guest speaker and instructor on Tuesday, June 17, 2008. The course is set-up in a classroom atmosphere where the students participate in role playing, skits, and group discussions. Through these discussions the students learn about the strengths of other band programs and learn new ideas for their own band. They also hear student leaders discuss their successes and failures and are able to pull from these experiences as they become student leaders. Each student is given a handbook which covers the subjects taught at camp and is a valuable tool for the student leader. Leadership Medals and Trophies are awarded to outstanding Leadership Campers at the end-of-camp program on Wednesday at 2:00 in McArthur Gymnasium. Friends and parents are invited to attend this ending program.
